That is the thought of anybody who involved with product development the first time they learn that one of the key components of their product is going end of life. That is when the realization becomes clear that it is time to spin up a product refresh and invariably, other parts of the solution are also getting long in the tooth and in need of an update.
Once the scale of the update is clear, then resources are usually the next consideration: procurement resources, engineering resources (electrical, mechanical, software, packaging, etc.), testing and compliance resources, marketing resources and anyone of a number of other functions that needs to be pulled in to determine the best way to bring to market the next generation product.
What happens of one of these areas doesn’t have bandwidth to start immediately scoping the work required to develop the next gen solution? What new technology should be included in the new product? How best to tune it based upon new hardware and software components? What to do if pre-production hardware on which to do testing isn’t available? And how about different go-to-market options, like virtualization or the Cloud in IT-based offerings?
Lots of things to consider when transitioning to the next generation of a given solution.
