As the buzz of @IBCShow 2011 dies down after another successful year and we look towards @NABShow in 2012, I can now reflect from a IT perspective on the key trends I saw at IBC 2011 as well as how they are impacting the industry and the immediate future. Taking a broad brush approach, there are some very clear trends that personally jumped out:

Speed of Delivery Matters

As the broadcast, media and entertainment industry continues to develop technologies to reach a larger more discerning customer base, the speed of delivery becomes even more critical for maintaining and growing customer loyalty. Whether it be faster post production workstation or faster bandwidth to cope with video on the internet, the need to adopt and work with open-standards-based technologies becomes more acutely emphasised to ensure performance, as well as efficient reliability along with scalability and stability.

I look forward to walking around IBC (International Broadcast Conference) this year to reiterate my point that the industry is adopting COTS (Common off the Shelf) IT products and services from Tier 1 manufacturers.

As the media and entertainment sector prepares to exhibit its wares at the International Broadcast Conference (IBC) from 8 – 13 September, I reflect on how this sector is quite simply one of the early adopters of leading edge technology whether it’s broadcast, big picture, TV, film, IPTV, or radio.
