Data in the right place at the right time for the right cost

Storage…… in a lot of cases is synonym to unprecedented growth, CapEx and complexity in many datacenters, with the occasional unfortunate headache as a result.   But, does it really have to be that way? At Dell we do not believe so, just like we don’t believe in the traditional silo approaches to architecting storage environments.

Dell is not bound by legacy proprietary technology and we do not believe storage should be complex at all. Instead we believe storage should be approached differently by thinking differently so we’ll get closer to ‘your needs’. As a result we have been spending a lot of time building a new breed of Data Management Solutions ...

Dell Storage Forum Enables OEMs’ Success

Last week Dell held its semiannual Dell Storage Forum (#DSF12) in Boston, MA focusing on our storage users and resellers.  As the storage marketing member of the OEM team I have been a strong advocate that you as OEMs get great ROI on the moneys spent sending your people to these three day events.

Why you ask, well let me highlight the benefits of attending for you.

Learn the latest products and storage technologies - Dell announced over half dozen new storage products and new technology around storage that will affect how you will design your storage systems in the future. Talk to the Experts – Dell had product experts available to cover ...

In my previous post on Interop 2011 (link) I was writing after just one day of experience. I was caught up in the excitement of the moment at that time and expected to come down off that initial emotional high, but to my surprise the excitement of the moment lasted to the end. Really cool! I mentioned some interesting items in the previous post, so let me talk about what else I learned while in Las Vegas.

Ethernet

10Gb Ethernet was commonplace at the show. While not adopted at the same rate as 1Gb Ethernet in the marketplace, the future is clearly 10Gb. Just about every Ethernet product vendor at Interop had ...

I’ve been writing about the true meaning of “long-life” in terms of computer lifecycles and how hardware developers can get the most from both COTS and controlled lifecycle hardware platforms. When I get asked for a long life product, too often I find the requester hasn’t considered many of the issues which invest such a solution.

Consider necessary changes – No matter how successfully a product is designed it is impossible to prepare for all possible issues requiring improvements or remedies. For example, something as simple as a network adapter might be discovered to have a minor compatibility issue with certain switches or a new IEEE spec is released for FCoE, ...

Any color you want, as long as it is black

While I’ve been living under a rock, I failed to see how quickly the enterprise computing world has added so many different hard-drive technologies to their standard list of options. At one time there was a single drive style you could choose to use in a just couple of capacities –  SCSI. That was it. To paraphrase Henry Ford in reference to the always-black Model T, you can have your hard drive in any technology you want… as long as it is SCSI.

Technology grows over time

I spent a decade selling SCSI storage solutions with pride under the assumption nothing could ...

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Google campus in Mountainview, CA to film a video with them. I have to tell you, all the rumors you’ve heard about their campus are true – they really do offer a multitude of meal choices all day and all night. And all free. They really do have on site laundry facilities, an infinity pool, and Google bicycles to take you from one building to the next. I’m not sure anyone who works there is actually ever motivated to leave…hm, maybe they’re onto something there.

But back to the reason I was at their site. I was doing a testimonial video with ...
